The Birth of an Iconic Sleep Experience
The story of Savoir begins in 1889 when Richard D’Oyly Carte opened The Savoy Hotel in London. The hotel quickly became the benchmark for luxury, impressing guests with its exceptional amenities and attention to detail. However, D’Oyly Carte wanted to go even further. He envisioned a bed that would offer an unmatched level of comfort, so he turned to renowned upholsterers James Edwards Limited and commissioned what would become the ultimate luxury bed.
Recognising the significance of this creation, D’Oyly Carte took exclusivity one step further. He purchased James Edwards Limited, ensuring that the bed remained unique to The Savoy. As word spread, high-profile guests began requesting their own, leading to the formation of The Savoy Bed works, where bespoke commissions were made for a select clientele.
A Bed Fit for Royalty
Savior's reputation soon spread beyond the walls of The Savoy, attracting the attention of King Hassan II of Morocco. Known for travelling with his own furniture, the King found himself in need of a replacement mattress while abroad. Forced to sleep on a Savoir Nº2 bed, he famously declared it “like sleeping on a cloud” and immediately ordered 24 beds for his palace.
Preserving Tradition in a Modern World
As demand for Savoir beds continued to grow, The Savoy sought a new owner for The Bedworks, but with one crucial condition: the legendary beds had to continue to be handcrafted using the same time-honoured techniques and finest natural materials. Unlike modern manufacturers focused on mass production, the new owner was committed to preserving the craft. The skilled artisans remained, ensuring that every Savoir bed was made with the same meticulous care and attention to detail.
With increased demand from the hospitality industry, a new classic was born, the Savoir Nº4. This model combined simpler handcrafting techniques with the same high-quality natural materials, making the exceptional comfort of Savoir beds available to a wider audience. As guests continued to enjoy the luxurious sleep experience in top hotels, demand grew, and soon the Nº4 became available in Savoir showrooms.

Over the years, the brand has taken on special commissions for its most discerning clients, creating everything from tailor-made beds for private jets and yachts to revolving and round beds.
